How the branch works
The Brazilian Red Cross — Rio de Janeiro Branch is the Rio de Janeiro State branch of the Brazilian Red Cross, the National Society of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Brazil. The Movement brings together the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the National Society of each country, all bound by the same seven fundamental principles.
The branch is a non-profit body, CNPJ 08.560.973/0001-97, recognised as being of municipal public utility by Law 5,153/2010 and of state public utility by Law 9,984/2023. The work is led by an executive board and by thematic coordination teams, and carried out largely by volunteers the branch trains itself. Its teaching arm is the Escola de Educação e Saúde CVB-RJ, which runs the in-person courses at the headquarters.

The Red Cross Palace
The branch works from the Red Cross Palace, at Praça da Cruz Vermelha, 10, in central Rio de Janeiro. The building takes up the block between Rua Carlos Carvalho and Rua Ubaldino do Amaral and Avenida Henrique Valadares and Avenida Carlos Sampaio, and is the historic headquarters of the Brazilian Red Cross, founded in 1908. In 2021 the complex was given provisional heritage protection by IPHAN, Brazil's National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute.
It is where the in-person courses, the initial volunteer training and the Winter Clothing Drive collection happen. The branch does not schedule medical appointments and does not answer emergencies: in an emergency, call 192 for an ambulance or 193 for the fire brigade.
Working with the branch

Say in the subject line which coordination team you are looking for, and the team replies within two business days.
Volunteering is open to anyone, with no requirement of a health background: the branch trains its own volunteers, and there are programmes for very different profiles. The working language is Portuguese. For anything concerning the Brazilian Red Cross nationally, rather than this state branch, the National Society is the right door.
